Just can't speak highly enough about a website that my daughter turned me on to, called airbnb. Fantastic site. And what a time saver. Pick anywhere you want to go in the world and the dates. The site first checks for availability. Then you can just start browsing the site for places in your price range. The airbnb site even calculates the exchange rate for you. The coolest part is that you make real human connections as most of the posts are personal homes or vacation properties owned by individuals like you and me. You can chat back and fourth on the site just like any social networking site. You make your deal directly with the person on the other end. Plus, you can legally avoid some tremendous tourist taxes and hotel taxes because it is all done on line.
You can even make arrangements to swap your place for theirs. And it is safe because you use Pay Pal to place your deposit just like an escrow account. The money is released when everyone is happy.
I am planning a trip now to Amsterdam and then to Paris for the New Year holiday, and will report back to you how well airbnb worked for me. If it is as good as it seems to be so far, I will probably be using it for my spring get away to Kauai.
